Diamantina Shire Council has received financial support through the Flood Risk Management Program, a jointly funded Australian and Queensland Government funding package managed by Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA), to undertake a flood study for Bedourie and Birdsville.Bedourie and Birdsville are two small towns located within the Diamantina Shire, where Bedourie resides in the middle of the region and Birdsville is found to the south, towards the South Australian border.

Diamantina consists of two main towns Birdsville and Bedourie, with a third town of Betoota.Bedourie is located 1,600km west of Brisbane, while Birdsville is 200km south of Bedourie and 1,200km from Adelaide.Our towns have four aircraft services per week on the Brisbane- Mount Isa Circuit. REX (Regional Express) provides this service. Despite it's size, Birdsville is a well-known destination for many Australian and International visitors. The town hosts one horse race meeting a year, when over 6,000 people swell the town population.
