- Weeds cost Australian grain growers $4.3 billion annually through yield loss and management costs. Roadsides are known to serve as vectors for herbicide resistance and weed spread into cropping paddocks which subsequently need to be controlled as part of farming systems. Participants of NGN forums have raised that management of roadside weeds might be contributing to challenges with weeds dispersing into cropping paddocks. Warooka NGN forum attendees note a number of hard to control weeds make management difficult on farm including flax leaf fleabane, a prolific producer of wind-dispersed seed. Fleabane is tolerant of glyphosate when applied at advanced growth stages, which is a likely scenario when roadside weeds are controlled on a timeline, resulting in failure of control and/or selecting for resistant plants. Feather top Rhodes grass is another weed of concern making its way into paddocks. This issue was also raised at the Langhorne Creek NGN Forum where proximity to small land holders, horticulture and viticulture, and negative community sentiment to chemical weed control can inhibit effective roadside weed management due to the need for more complex integrated management strategies.
