Description:
Emerging technologies that enable directed recombination in plants, such as methods to reduce linkage drag during the introgression of wild genetic diversity, tools to overcome recombination suppression, and strategies to promote rare recombination events offer powerful avenues to accelerate genetic gain in breeding programs. By generating or combining novel genetic diversity, these approaches can significantly shorten the time to deliver improved crop genetic packages to Australian growers. This AU$4.5M investment will support the development of new tools for targeted recombination in breeding programs. To demonstrate the value of these methodologies and their path-to-market potential, proposals must focus on key crop and trait targets with a compelling value proposition. Collaborative responses are strongly encouraged, for instance bringing together international and Australian organisations, researchers, breeders, traditional and non-traditional partners, and both public and private sector entities. GRDC requires a 50 : 50 co-investment for this initiative.
