Description:
Sorghum is Australia-s most important summer cereal. It is being traded principally as a single-grade commodity, “Sorghum” (SOR), for human and animal consumption alike (GrainCorp, 2024). Over the past 10-years, Australia has produced about 1.6 million tonnes of sorghum per annum, a large majority of which is exported to China (ABARES). Price premiums of ~18% (10-year average) paid by export markets over the domestic feed price are a key driver for exports (ABARES). The bulk of domestic sorghum consumption is generally animal feed (dairy and beef cattle, pigs, poultry, and pets), with only 2% estimated to be used domestically in food and beverages. GRDC is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from Research Organisations willing to participate and co-investing in a Functional Sorghum Collective aimed at advancing RD&E to increase domestic demand for sorghum in the food/beverage sector; to help diversify market opportunities for Australian growers, and secure domestic price premiums at least equal to those paid for export sorghum.
