The opportunity for Australian grains growers to leverage both old and newly emerging soils and nutrition research is vast and promising. Understanding the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils and their interactions is key to managing soils to their full production potential. - Expert soil advice - Soil basics (101) - Soil Carbon knowledge - Interpreting soil tests The major gap was identified as : Declining soil knowledge expertise. With the reasons for this gap identified as : • On job, long term training no longer available as state government workforce contracts • Early career positions exist e.g. private companies, farming systems groups and NRMs but more generalist roles • Declining resources from state government departments of agriculture • Many organisations lack the structure to provide adequate soil mentoring of new/junior extension employees • Experts in huge demand but are stretched to service regions adequately • Reduced depth in soils and extension within tertiary training to build critical mass of experts Given the various gaps and needs that impede the extension and hence swift adoption of GRDC soils and nutrition research, there is a significant demand for a comprehensive educational suite of resources.
